Migraines impact many people, often disrupting daily routines with intense and varying symptoms. Unlike common headaches, migraines present unique challenges and can differ greatly from person to person. Common triggers include stress, poor sleep, certain foods, and other environmental factors.
Migraines typically progress through four stages:
Prodromal Stage
This early phase occurs up to 24 hours before the migraine begins. During this time, you might notice changes such as food cravings, mood swings, or frequent yawning that you cannot explain.
Aura Stage
The aura phase may happen just before or during the onset of the migraine. Visual disturbances like flashing lights or zigzag patterns are common. Some people also experience unusual sensations on the face or body.
Pain Phase
The headache phase often builds gradually into severe, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. However, not all migraines include intense pain. Each person’s experience can vary widely.
Other Symptoms and Postdrome
Migraines may also bring symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to smells. After the headache subsides, many experience postdrome symptoms, sometimes called a migraine hangover, which can include exhaustion, weakness, and difficulty concentrating lasting up to a day.
It is important to remember that migraines may not always present with all of these symptoms, and some people experience migraines without any pain at all.
How Migraines Differ from Other Headaches
Migraines usually involve moderate to severe throbbing or pulsing pain localized on one side of the head. In contrast, tension headaches cause a band-like pressure around the head, often starting in the neck. Sinus headaches create pressure and pain around the forehead and cheeks near the sinus areas.
Effective Pain Management for Migraines
Treating migraines often requires a tailored approach. Over-the-counter pain medications can help, but many patients benefit from specialized treatments such as trigger point injections or peripheral nerve blocks. These advanced options are designed to target the specific nerves causing migraine pain.
Keeping a headache diary is an effective way to track triggers and frequency, providing valuable information to develop a personalized treatment plan.
